Where did summer go? We are already part way through August! In July, Windsor fencers completed foil training. This month we are practicing Epee.
USFA MEMBERSHIP FOR ALL STUDENTS High Plains Fencing Guild is a member of USA Fencing! Each student is required to be a member of USA Fencing after their first class or you will not be eligible to participate in class. The entry level membership for students is access membership ($29.00). Competitive membership is $99 and required for competition level fencers. See your coach if you have any questions. USFA offers a discounted club rate for High Plains Fencing Guild, which allows us to keep fencing affordable for the students. Typical club fees are at least $200 a month with no drop in rate. Go to Individual Membership (usafencing.org) to sign up. As of today, they do not have High Plains Fencing Guild listed as an active club, due to our membership this past week. If we are not an option on the list when you sign up, sign up as unaffiliated and you can change your affiliation later. NEW CLASS-COMPETITION EPEE! Competition Epee with Coach Eliott Ferrell-Carretey is going well and has been well attended. Please note that the class time changed and it is offered on Wednesdays from 6:45-8:15 p.m. at the Windsor Rec. Center fitness room (same as our Friday classes). The class has been pushed back 15 minutes. Who should consider Competition Epee? Those 14 years and up who want to train to learn the more advanced skills necessary as well as increase their endurance to participate in USFA-sanctioned tournaments. Coach Elliott is a USFA nationally ranked fencer and we are excited to have him available to train our students. Remember to get your own electric epees and body cords. EXTRA TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Windsor Rec. Center We have beginner youth at 5, intermediate youth at 6 and adult at 7 p.m. on Fridays. Eaton Rec. Center Epee on Mondays, Saber on Tuesdays and Foil on Wednesdays. Youth classes start at 6, adults at 7 pm. Drop ins are also welcome in Eaton and Windsor. Please check in at the front desk to pay drop in fees and bring your receipt to your coach in Eaton or in Windsor. This is a great way to get in extra practice and meet other fencers. THANK YOU TO OUR ARMORER, TREVOR WILSON! Thanks to our armorer, Trevor Wilson, for filling in for me on July 21. I understand that he pushed fleche drills to student exhaustion, but I did see some successful fleches the next week. If you have any gear questions or need a repair, please see Trevor and he’ll be happy to help. JULY FOIL TOURNAMENT RESULTS
REMEMBER-the last class of each month is a tournament and we have to hustle to get all the matches in our time slot. Late attendees cannot participate after the tournament begins. INTER CLUB TOURNAMENTS Coach Elaine Cheris a 3 time US Olympic Fencer invites members of High Plains Fencing Guild to Cheyenne Fencing and Modern Pentathlon at 11 a.m. any Saturday to work out with her students. There will be an interclub tournament the last Saturday at noon each month at Cheyenne Fencing, 5818 E. Colfax Avenue in Denver. I encourage everyone to consider going to an interclub tournament. They have 4 reeled strips and use epees. There are spare gear kits to borrow from them until you get your own competition gear! If you have any club gear that you are not using, please return it to the Windsor Rec. Center front desk with your name attached, so I can check it in. It is a pleasure to be your coach!
